Where It All Began
Six pipers gathered in Saint John on November 30, 1908, with a vision to form a Highland pipe band. The Caledonian Pipe Band was born, beginning a musical tradition that would span generations. What started with six musicians became more than a century of pipes, drums, and community.
The World War Era
Both World Wars called Caledonian members away from the band and into active service. In 1943, the band itself was placed on active service strength with the R.C.N.V.R. at HMCS Brunswicker. It would become the only full Naval Pipe Band in the British Commonwealth.
The Post-War Years
Following the war, the Caledonian returned to a busy life of music, community appearances, naval functions, and competition. The band performed at historic occasions and travelled throughout Atlantic Canada and Maine. By the 1970s, it was also earning recognition on the North American competition field.
A New Chapter
The band began a long-term affiliation with the Simonds Lions Club and became the Simonds Lions Caledonian Pipe Band. The partnership brought renewed resources, activity, and interest to the organization. Royal Stewart tartan also became a defining part of the band's full-dress look.
Generations of Leadership
Liam Freill was elected Pipe Major in 2012, beginning a new chapter in the band's musical leadership. The years that followed brought ambitious musical goals, continued development, and eventually an opportunity to take the Caledonian across the Atlantic.
100 Years & Counting
More than 100 years after its founding, the Caledonian travelled to Scotland to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. The band achieved its goal of advancing to the final round and also competed in North Berwick and Perth. It was a milestone years in the making.
A Challenge No One Expected
The COVID-19 pandemic halted band activities and brought significant challenges, including membership losses and the loss of the band's longtime practice venue. As restrictions eased, an old friend welcomed the Caledonian back: HMCS Brunswicker. Rehearsals resumed, members returned, and rebuilding began.
The Saint John Caledonian Pipe Band
With a new chapter underway, the band adopted the name Saint John Caledonian Pipe Band in 2023. A new logo and stronger public presence followed, while the Caledonian name connected the organization directly back to its 1908 roots.
The Next Chapter
SJCPB returned strongly to the competition field, earning podium finishes in Moncton, Antigonish, and Fredericton. Newer musicians developed alongside experienced players while the band's performance and parade schedule continued to grow. The focus is now firmly on what comes next.
